Dawn Orange
By, JMW Turner

Comparison:
In The Long Leg painting, by Edward Hopper, the colors used make the scenery in the painting calm. By using the bright blue paint for the water, the water looks clean and fresh. When looking at this painting I begin to think about the summer time and a new beginning. The light in the painting shows that the scenery is during the day time. The main color in the painting is blue, but white and sand are used to show the beach, the lighthouse, and the sail boat.

Dawn Orange, by JMW Turner, there are many shades of blue, yellow, pink, purple, and orange. The colors used set the mood for the painting. While looking at this painting I get the feel of a sunset in the sky. The way JMW Turner brushed the paint in the sky makes it look like the colors are moving in the clouds.  The reflection of the sky in the water brings all the colors together.

Both paintings are set with a sail boat on the water, but both are set at different times and express different ideas. I like both of the paintings but feel like they both show the differences between colors and artists.

 At the Concert Européen

Hunger
By,  Kathe Kollwitz

Comparison:
In At the Concert Européen, by Georges Seurat, the way Seurat is using the pencil to show light and dark helps focus the drawing on the women in the middle. Georges Seurat is famous for his use of pointillism in his paintings. In this drawing the way the pencil is used gives a feeling a pointillism. By having different shades with the pencil I feel like the drawing comes alive and makes the drawing look real.

Hunger, by Kathe Kollwitz, is a drawing that primarily uses the color black. I think that by having the majority of the drawing black, the white parts pop off the page. Kollwitz uses the darkness to her advantage and makes it look as though she has carved the people out of the paper.

Both drawings use different techniques to show the people in the work. While Seurat uses more detail in his work, he always doesn't use as much dark. Kathe Kollwitz uses a lot of dark to show the way the people look. Seurat and Kollwitz have different styles, but they both know how the color they use in there pictures matters.

Thinking about drawing and painting

I believe that painting and drawing an image, as apposed to take a picture of it, is a way of seeing the image in a different light. Photography is something that I love, but I feel that by spending time and drawing a scene or an object out you are showing how you see the object. I think that pictures can also show how you see the object, but in a different medium.

When I draw an paint I feel like I can let myself make mistakes and learn new techniques. I know that in art you are always learning new things, but when I take a picture I know what I need to do. I think that with photography and painting you need to learn new things that can make you a better artist in the end. I enjoy the fact that photography, painting,  and drawing are different because I feel like I am doing something different in all of them. I think that painting and drawing will always be an art form that has many different techniques that a person can master.

In our world today, we can use two dimensional art as a way to show the different feelings and ideas, depending on the shapes, colors, and movement we use in our work. I know that Shepard Fairey covers a lot of political topics in his work by using different images, colors, and words to get his point across. In art you don't always need to use words to get a point across because art is open to many different interpretations. I like the fact that art is open to many different ideas because it makes looking at something and have a different view from someone else interesting.
